Active ingredients in popular bar soap brands:

• Benzalkonium Chloride - Quaternary ammonium compound (QAC). Chronic low doses of QAC’s may cause acute toxicity, lead to antimicrobial resistance, or cause neurotoxicity. Skin/eye/respiratory irritant. Damaging to DNA. Harmful to aquatic organisms.

• Cocamidopropyl Betaine - Synthetic compound typically made with propylene glycol (below).

• Triclocarban - Blood, liver, and kidney toxicity. Endocrine/thyroid/gut microbiome disruptor. Highly toxic to aquatic life. Persistent environmental pollutant which can convert to carcinogenic compounds. 

Inactive ingredients in popular bar soap brands:

• Dyes - Petroleum and coal tar derived carcinogens contaminated with arsenic and lead. The whole list of Blues, Yellows, Reds, Greens, and all of the corresponding numbers… Green 3, Yellow 10, etc.

• Tetrasodium EDTA - Made using formaldehyde and sodium cyanide, known carcinogens. May contain dioxane, another carcinogen. May cause organ damage, especially to the lungs. A known skin irritant that may also cause immunotoxicity as well as reproductive and developmental issues. (Tetrasodium etidronate is a close cousin of tetrasodium EDTA.)

• Titanium Dioxide - Has the capability, especially in the form of nanoparticles, to enter the bloodstream resulting in neurotoxicity… toxic to the central nervous system.

Ingredients in popular body care brands:

• Aluminum - Controversial ingredient in antiperspirant. Potential link to cancer. 

• Behentrimonium Methosulfate - Another quaternary ammonium compound (see toxicity above). Skin/eye/respiratory irritant.
• Diazolidinyl Urea - Belongs to an infamous family of formaldehyde releasers, slowly releasing formaldehyde when in a formula.
• Disodium EDTA - Synthesized from formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. Can interfere with the production of blood cells. Damaging to kidneys. Disrupts the skin cell surface allowing other toxic ingredients to enter the skin.
• Dyes - (see toxicity above)
• Mineral Oil - Heavily processed petroleum product derived from crude oil. If not highly refined, it may contain carcinogens. Should not be applied to sensitive skin areas (eyes/nose/mouth/groin).

• Petrolatum - Classified a carcinogen in the EU.  By-product of refining crude oil. Can become contaminated during refining with PAH’s, carcinogens linked to breast cancer. (Lotions/Lip Balms)

• Propylene Glycol - Synthetic by-product of fossil fuels and fermentation found in brake fluid and antifreeze. May cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. Small enough molecular weight to enter bloodstream.
• Sodium Bicarbonate - Non-toxic, but a skin irritant in deodorant. Disrupts skin’s pH.

Additional bad actors in body care and bar soap:

Petroleum-based glycerin, GMO oils (vegetable/corn), synthetic detergents and preservatives (can morph skin cells), phthalates, parabens, PEG’s (polyethylene glycol), polysorbate, carbomer, SLS, alcohols, BHT, Laureth-#, Steareth-#, Ceteareth-#, and synthetic fragrances (like Lilial) which are highly toxic.
